Footnote:
In 1913 he took a BA degree course in Architecture at Manchester University and was awarded the Manchester Society of Architecture prize for the measured drawings of the town hall, referring to it as being ‘built by Francis Goodwin in 1825’ and ‘destroyed in 1912’.
He saw active service during the war with the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Territorials, before returning to work for his father’s architects practice, Howcroft & Son in Oldham in 1921. During his time at the firm, he designed many buildings including the Electricity Board Offices, The King’s Theatre and the Regent Hotel, all in Oldham, as well as the memorial cenotaph on the ‘pots and pans’ hill in Saddleworth.
He later went on to serve again in the second world war before entering public life on his return, and becoming a Councillor in 1945
